The home for the aged and infirm is the first institute of the congregation of
the sisters of the destitute. This is a religious congregation originated in Ernakulum. Ankamaly Diocese,
in 1927 with the vision of serving the destitute brethren in the society. The congregation was founded by
the Servant of God Fr. Varghese Payyappilly, a zealous and devoted priest who was very much concerned
about the sufferings of the destitute people especially the elders in the society. At the moment it
has 83 years of expertise in caring the elders. In his realization about the absence of old age homes
in Kerala, he initiated this first old age home in the state in 19th March 1927 at Chunangamvely.
Various organizations approach this agency for an authentic training in rehabilitating the elders.
For the past 83 years the congregation is serving thousands elders irrespective of cast creed and
religion. Gradually the congregation has invited by the various government and non-government agencies
to undertake similar services in different parts of the country. At present congregation have 210
institutions undertake various services among the poor and needy people in the society.
